Contains three of the now, sadly, late author's best stories, and the rest are no mean shakes either. Mr Cubb And Mr Cuff literally makes the flesh creep. The Haunted Village is quite astonishingly eerie. Pork Pie Hat is an extended puzzle whose pieces begin to slide into place just when you've given up on it making any kind of sense.

I genuinely liked this, it starts out spooky and creepy and strange and then leans into its premise all the way and wrings an exciting and suspenseful fantasy/horror adventure out of a bunk bed, a carpet and a door

Reasonably well-contructed tale of small town awash with terror as cultists try to bring back the Old Gods via a snow storm in June, and while assorted monsters chow down on the populace the local cops and a sort of aparanormal consultant try to save the world. It's fine, but the prose, never bad, was just serviceable, and didn't really inspire me to go any further with the series. (I'm cranky and oversensitive and hard to please at the moment - I found the prose in Cassandra Khaw's Nothing But Blackened Teeth overly ornate and stilted, while Laird Barron's prose suits me just fine - I blame covid.) The 'Irish Gaelic' pronunciation sounded like something out of Lovecraft, ironically enough.

Cosmic horror with a YA feel as two young friends, one a wealthy child prodigy, the other a close friend who works in a supermarket stock room, discover that the prodigy's new miracle power source opens holes into other dimensions where ancient godlike beings sleep, waking them and drawing their attention. There's a fair bit of angst in this as Nick ponders his friendship with Johnny, their relative status in terms of race, wealth and class, but there's secrets and betrayals ahead as they race across the world to stop the gods returning. It's well written, mostly fast-paced - some of the angsting drags things down a bit, and the central relationship is well-realised.

Excellent fantasy/horror about literal Ku Klux monstersin the 1920s US south feeding on hate and the black people fighting a war against them.

Lots of good stories, slightly let down by one narrator whose English accent is only slightly better than his pronunciation of Irish names.

Just more of Davidson's wonderfully meandering sentences and wonderfully meandering plot, both of which snap into sense and focus with dazzling intellectual and linguistic dexterity. Vergil is drawn to Averno, a very rich and uniquely horrible city, but who has drawn him there and why? If not already familiar, worth quickly looking up 'Averno' when finished for a sense of how much of a satisfying medieval just-so legend this really is.

Excellent depiction of deep diving and the creepy supernatural as a documentary team search for a mysterious wreck, and a slow build as the haunted nature of the wreck becomes increasingly apparent, interspersed with flashbacks to the increasingly horrifying last days of the ship's final doomed voyage.

Two brothers accidentally enrage an entire holy army and flee for their lives with the most dangerous elite troops and killers on their trail, plunging into a dried seabed desert with their companions, only to find all sorts of danger and terrors al around them. This is a lot of fun, the relationship with the brothers occasinally touching but mostly believably aggravating. They may not be the master assassins they're taken for, but they're not entirely stupid and quite resourceful when cornered. They also find themselves tasked with a secret mission that could affect the entire world, if they survive that long.
