I really wish we could give half stars - a 4 and a half star read. Better than the Sharpe novels. Really excellent.

Jan 2018 - watching season 2 of the TV series so decided it was time to read this again...

I was sooo disappointed by this. I was expecting a dramatic romance (something like MM Kaye), and I got a whiny heroine with no backbone and a dull hero with a rather unrealistic ending.

I'd read a lot about the author's fantastic descriptions of India, but they did absolutely nothing for me. In fact I ended up skimming bits as i found it so bland. I also found some of the editing a bit off, with the flow of the book jarring at times.

I love this sort of story and I really thought I'd found a new author with lots of tales to read, but I'm not sure I'll try another. So many people seem to love her writing, I wonder if I missed something, but it just didn't do anything much for me. Nearly a DNF.

This just didn't grab me. It should have done. It was very well written. But in spite of the writing I just found it a bit of a chore... Lots of other people seem to love it though, so give it a try.
