I'm afraid I really didn't enjoy this much. I love the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series but this was a let down. And although you get a good impression of Edinburgh, unless you have a reasonable knowledge of philosophy, music, Scottish poetry and modern art, you're going to be a bit lost with this one at times.
I was pleasantly surprised by this one - it makes a very good (if unusual) sequel to P&P. It's a love story rather than all about vampires, although it does have some classic moments that remind me of Dracula. Elizabeth is strong and intelligent as always and Darcy is just perfect of course. But how will Darcy the vampire and Elizabeth the mortal be able to live happily ever after? (Twilight for the 1800s!) There are some lovely references to events and conversations from P&P, but I think you could still enjoy it without reading the classic if you wanted.
