the plot contrivances felt unearned. and I couldn’t quite get myself to quite suspend disbelief. a lot of it hinges on the
miscommunication
trope, which I’m coming to realize I dislike. and although I did understand the affection between the two leads, the declaration of love occurs after knowing each other for
seven days and I’ve never really been a fan of instalove :(

in short, it had tropes I don’t like and I didn’t know that going in. not necessarily the book’s fault. for what its worth. I kept reading until the end. which is more than could be said about most other romance books I start and promptly don’t finish.

andrew joseph white. bravo. the writing is so tight and consistently compelling. the romance between
silas and daphne
is one of the most delightful things ive read in recent memory. theres something about reading about characters deeply entrenched for a passion for medicine that will always be a little bit of my kryptonite. especially in a historical setting AND a queer character.
i’m so
happy they got their happy ending i was really worried
near the end there with
lord luckenbill, daphne’s father, there was gonna be a horrible twist
ending.
there were moments in the middle I felt it lagged. it maybe could’ve used some editing. regardless it was delightful

i’m going to start off by saying. if you get it you get it if you don’t you don’t if you know you know. either you get the vibe or you don’t get the vibe

i started reading right before bed and mentally i was like. let me just read the first page. and then i looked up and i was a quarter of my way through the book.

the writing style is incredibly engrossing. its very quip and readable but not without personality. it’s so easy to read. there’s almost something incredibly mundane about all of it. but you still want to keep reading to know what happens next. its so addictive thats all i can say. eliza clark is some sort of wizard.

the book follows irina, a professional photographer who is known for taking risque photos of men. there’s not really a need to know much else besides the fact you are reading a horror novel. be wary of trigger warnings if applicable

i’m not entirely settled on a rating I think
I’ll need to sit on it a bit more but its definitely one I haven’t been able to stop thinking about which is always a sign of a winner.

Do you like it rough? I think so. I think I must. Men are rough, aren’t they? Have I always had a taste for rough stuff, or did I acquire that? In the back of Lesley’s car, on the floor of a friend’s house, half-conscious with my underwear around my ankles? Was it my idea to have him hurt me, or did he just let me think it was? And that gets sewn into them young, doesn’t it? Violence.”

for better or for worse. I went into this with my expectations too high. it was. fine.

the prose was good but nothing to die for. none of the characters felt realistic or even sympathetic to me (except indigo at points and azure’s mom who I’m not even sure we know her name).

one of those things that seems like it will be for me on paper, but I don’t resonate with in practice.

I dont get it babes (the hype) :/

“Oaths are brittle things, not unlike an egg. Though they go by different names depending on the myth—troths and geis, vows and tynged—there is one thing they all share: they must be broken for there to be a story.”

this is so much better than i remembered. i harbored so much hatred for this as a kid (mostly since it was assigned). but reading it now it’s terrifying how its themes of anti-intellectualism remain prevalent. even the idea of “sea shells” in peoples ears sounds like a not too far off description of airpods. the history is warped and dictated by the dominant class. the firemen are relegated as nothing more than agents of policing for reenforcement of the status quo

on this read, I did pick up it is undoubtedly misogynistic. theres not one but two instances of fridging. there’s a line when a man says to the protag “Survival is our ticket. Forget the poor, silly women…” regarding his wife. of course, because survival does not include women. and certainly wouldn’t be helmed by them

it lost me a little bit there at the end. gets a bit too fantastical and unbelievable. the
manhunt
for montag feels particularly ridiculous when the
police ask citizens to look out their windows
. and the ending involving
“people as books”  feels unsustainable when knowing the fallibility of human memory
. but I suppose that’s the point. certainly something I can see myself reading again to glean more still.
