This was a weird little book of apocalypse + myth. I think when I bought it I thought it looked cozy? And the name of course got me. But this book has a really visceral quality, the descriptions are so well done that I felt grossed out at times. I had a hard time following the story at certain points, and I think maybe the book did a little too much to leave the reveals about the main characters until the end, but I liked it overall. I’m happy I took a chance on a weird little speculative book.

I think I would really like this story if it didn’t include the romance plot lines. I majorly disliked both of the men Olga dated, and it felt like the book was going to do the romance trope I hate of having one of them be a horrific villain to make the other lame dude seem like a romantic hero. All the while, this cool female character (I did like a lot about Olga) has to put up with both of their shit and get abused by one of them.

This was a great follow up to Pet, giving us the backstory for Bitter and the first appearance of the angels. To me it didn’t have quite the same magic of the original, maybe because the characters were more independent and away from their families, but I still absolutely recommend and would read any other books set in this world.

Strong thriller! I really enjoyed this one, and I found the twists and red herrings compelling. Also multiple surprise WLWs! Always a win!
