Taboo should be considered a modern classic of Australian literature. Difficult to read in parts, it's a thorny book which is astoundingly written by Kim Scott, who's work I desperately need to look more into. Heed the trigger warnings because this book can be a lot, but it's so worth it.

The way Carol Ann Duffy writes about being in love can make even this aromantic heart yearn briefly.

This was really cute! I do think my expectations were a little too high after just how much I adored Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating and this couldn’t live up to that. I think the place this book let me down was unfortunately the romance. I wish this had just been Nishat’s story and that Flavía wasn’t a love interest, or at least that the book wasn’t so focused on that romance. Otherwise I really enjoyed it! I listened to the audiobook and it was really good.
Just a note, Elliot Page’s deadname is mentioned in this which is obviously unavoidable as the book was released before he came out and has seemingly been corrected in future printings. I hope it’s also changed in the audiobook at some point.
