Didn't expect it to be as good as I remembered but it is. Makes the sequel even more disappointing really, but this one is very funny and not as depressing as I expected, considering.

Benjamin Myers really blew me away with this one.
I'd expected something good, but the sort of brilliance that came out of this was really above and beyond what I'd thought I'd get.
I was initially curious because of the subject matter, given I am from county Durham, but from the very first page I was completely blindsided by the format of the novel which is so incredibly inventive without sacrificing any comprehension.
There is also a lovely sense of Myers' style throughout the whole thing, which I hadn't expected given his other books are all more or less standard prose (whatever that means).
I'm not sure there is a lot to say about this one besides recommending that you read it, because it's not the content so much as how it is presented to you that makes you feel as though you are growing alongside the legacy of Saint Cuthbert and with the city of Durham as you move through the book.

It's not often books are too short, but u do think this one could have gone on another hundred pages without losing my interest. It's brilliant as it is, but feels more bitty than I expected - it works, just not in the way I thought it would.

I genuinely think Benjamin Myers has somehow become one of my favourite authors without even realising. The mix of British folklore and contemporary writing style is just perfect and this is definitely the best so far. There's still a couple of his lit-fic books I haven't read yet and I cannot wait.

The ending was a little bit too silly and convoluted for my tastes, and some of the petty bitchiness did feel like a man trying to emulate what he thinks women's relationships are like.
Other than that pretty solid as a murder mysterly/thriller and I did quite enjoy the digging into each character's past.

I only listened to this because my library had it and it looked sort of fun. It absolutely exceeded my expectations and I had a great time (and I will attribute some f that to a great voice actor).

I don't read a lot of books directly dealing with grief and that sort of thing, but this one deals with everything in such a beautiful way and with no self-consciousness at all. Oof.

Admittedly better than I expected but also very much of the genre. I really appreciate how tounge in cheek the author was with the political stuff, despite the odd bit here and there that betrayed how much this is really just a romance. Very fun, though!

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Perhaps a little bit too dry at points, but more importantly than that I do feel like there was a lot of hedging of bets in terms of the medical side of things that was probably the best way of dealing with the issue.
