Ok so, this book could have gone 4 stars or could have gone 2, but it does not get 3. Because 3 is for solidly good, and 4 is for really solid, but 2 is for this book made me mad. And it is really solidly constructed, until the end. The pacing is perfect, the writing is clear and fun, the dramatic reveal is predicted but not predicted too soon, the characters are a bit flat but have believable motives. BUT the ending is both a cliffhanger AND sloppy. And I'm having a hard time forgiving it.
Several chapters in and all I've got is a plucky orphan with no back story who inexplicably wants to see the sea. Give me something to work with here!

lighthearted and funny, with a true to life child's voice. I love hte inclusion, from body shape to mobility aids to prosthetics to top surgery scars and beyond.

A bit twee, but I would have loved this if I encountered it at the correct age.

An important read for current kids, though the note about how we we persist even if these methods become needed again is sobering.

turns out to be a spinoff of the school of Good and Evil, and I havne't read them. I think this is meant ot be understandable as a stand-alone, and it is, but I don't feel the draw to the characters as I might if I already knew them.

Illustrations are beautiful, the poetic meaning is layered and nuanced but...this is a book for adults. I can't see a kid really loving it, it's too nuanced.
