I hesitated to read this series because of all the hype...I'm glad I read it. I think the first volume is still my favorite, but this series as a whole deserves all the praise it gets. Loved the sign language issue. It's very well done. Clint and Barney's struggle to communicate through sign wonderfully parallels their history of communication issues. Lots of last minute plot twists and a hell of a finale. I absolutely recommend this series.
I was really looking forward to taking a deep dive into the work of Jules Verne, but I don't think I'll touch another book of his because this was such a chore to read. Once the main cast joins up with Nemo, the book ditches the idea of having an over-arching plot for just going on crazy trips around the ocean. And you know what? That's fine. I'm cool with reading a simple adventure story and 20k has some pretty cool locations/settings. Unfortunately 20,000 Leagues is a science-fiction book from the mid 20th century AND IT READS LIKE ONE. Long winded descriptions of fauna, entire chapters where characters do nothing but mope around the Nautilus; it's too dry and too long for it's own good. Sorry Nemo, I'm headed back to the surface.
Decided to re-read the Bone series (in full color this time!!!!!!!) at the start of the new year. Not sure if it's the art or the humor but this feels like an old newspaper comic strip. The designs themselves feel like this old school mix of Disney, Ted Geisel, and Bill Waterson. Just a fun nostalgic read.
Yup. This is definitely where the series hits its stride. Jokes and artwork are still top notch like the previous volumes, but the main conflict in the story shows up here and we get a lot more info on the world that the Bones have walked into. Great read.
"War. We're at war."
"What have we done?"
I think this series might actually be better than I remember.
