This book was not what I wanted it to be. Am I going to read the rest of the trilogy? Absolutely. But I hated Scarlett. I still actively hate her. She is too naive and distractable, and the ending just threw everything into this mess that didn't make sense to me. It was as if we couldn't commit to there being consequences, so everything got tied up in a pretty bow, with one last final twist to build the second book off of. I just really wanted more.
CAWPILE:
C: 3 - these characters were annoying, I only liked a couple of them and they were side characters.
A: 9 - THIS I can give a higher rating. The world of Caraval is magical and amazing, with twists and hidden trap doors, where nothing makes sense and it's not supposed to.
W: 5 - the world building was great, the characters and ending plot were not.
P: 5 - the plot made sense in a whimsical nonsensible way but then it...broke down in a bad way.
I: 9 - I was really interested the whole time and desperately wanted to know what was going to happen, I will give the book that edge of the seat twists and turns feeling some credit here.
L: 5 - the ending didn't make sense and I'm mad about it, but it was happy? but it didn't make sense.
E: 9 - despite the things I hated, most of that came at the end (other than disliking the main character) so I did thoroughly enjoy reading this book, right up until the final chapters.
