Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am not the biggest fan of contemporary books. This is usually something I can get past for a book marketed as a queer book, but this particular story made it difficult. It felt as though we were not moving towards anything throughout the entire book. Cass continually runs away from her problems while creating more for herself. This story felt as though it was marketed to be more of a contemporary-thriller based on the given summary. This is not at all what the book is. Cass is given opportunity after opportunity, with privilege literally handed to her, and she continues to sabotage herself. She blamed success itself for turning herself into a bad person when, in reality, she was already that person.
The writing of this book was solid. The intrigue of wanting to know what happened to BB and why Cass was running from NYC were the only things the kept me reading.

I would like to preface this review with: I feel misled. This book is marketed as though it is a mystery. It’s listed on Goodreads with “Mystery” as a subgenre. Marketing a book is incredibly important, and for people like me who know what kind of genres they enjoy, this is frustrating. It also causes people who don’t want contemporary to read this book and end up with not great reviews because, well, it’s not what they expected.
The way each of the girl's mental illnesses is written feels well researched and well-considered. I felt that was well done and worth noting. Moira actually has character growth, albeit a bit suddenly. It felt as though she worked through her grief rather quickly to conveniently wrap up the book, which was a bit frustrating. As often happens with books like these, the romance in it was completely unnecessary. Moira was just learning how to have friends, I don’t think navigating a romantic relationship was necessary.
All in all, this was a 3.5 out of 5 stars for me.

The concept of this book was interesting. The world itself was like nothing I had seen before. Of course, I’ve seen necromancy and bone magic- but never a world in which that is the only magic. Additionally, this felt like the aftermath of a YA fantasy where they save the world. I really loved the idea of this and how it was executed. The heroes have aged quite a bit, and each has dealt with the trauma in individual ways. These ways were not always healthy, but they were what they had to do. This book made me feel so many emotions. I cried over characters I didn’t expect to and I was proud of characters that initially I wasn’t interested in. Durst did a fantastic job of developing the character growth of both their past and present and developing a world that was amazing to read about.

This was one of the best middle-grade books I have ever read. The twists genuinely had me shocked, and this is coming from someone who often figures out thrillers well before I should have. I found it cohesive and understandable, which is really important for a book of this age group. It is a bit dark, with parents dying of suspicious circumstances and perhaps a murder or two, but with the popularity of a Series of Unfortunate Events, I can see this book selling well.
