Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As someone who is in the process of getting diagnosed with POTS (and regardless, someone who passes out frequently), this story touched me. From that standpoint, the way Tania was treated (both good and bad) made me tear up. The representation here was fantastic and realistic. This is understandable, as our author also has this condition.
The story itself was intriguing, politically fueled without being too complex and overwhelming. I adored our various girls who helped Tania, and their relationships as well. While I've never read the original musketeers, I have seen movies and the like, and this still had that same air of adventure.
I suppose my only takeaways, and the reason for this being 4 stars instead of 5, was a mix of the pacing and the consistent use of untranslated French. The French wasn't necessarily an issue for me personally, as I have studied the basics of it, but at times I did still find it irritating to have to look for context clues for translation. The pacing felt a bit choppy, and it made it difficult to stay in the story.

3.5 stars, ish? Still thinking about that one.
This story is written in a way that makes you feel the sticky, hot humidity of the farmland. The prose is beautiful, making each thing feel tangible and each feeling worth empathizing with. However, the beautiful prose seems to take some away from the story. The story itself is in a category of horror that I consider myself a big fan of- weird horror. Yet, I found myself bored with the entire thing. As though the interpersonal issues of all the characters woven in with the horror made it feel like two separate books. If there was more horror, I would have loved it. If there were more character issues, I would have classed it as a contemporary but would have enjoyed the plot more. But because we allowed neither one of these things to take center stage, it kept the book from being as interesting as I think it could have been.

3.5, rounded up.
Once this story found its footing, it became a really solid tale. The prose, however, felt a bit choppy to me, and this caused me to put it down for over a month after the first quarter because I couldn't make myself get into it. The slow burning romance of our teens was really sweet, and I found myself rooting for them a lot towards the end. I like Sigrid, she's interesting and her motivations make sense. I'm not familiar enough with Norse lore to comment on its accuracy, but I found it intriguing and informative enough from that point of view.
