Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I so deeply wanted to enjoy this, but it fell flat for me. So much should have been expanded on, or given more detail to, and we failed to receive that. I felt like I got a half-written story with absolutely gorgeous art. And the art IS gorgeous, and that should definitely be noted. But as a cohesive story, it really misses the mark.

Lori M. Lee's writing is something I've enjoyed before, so I was really interested in seeing where she went with a middle-grade book. I also love the Rick Riordan Presents collective, making this something I was highly anticipating. With fast pacing and really funny characters, the charm of Pahua and the Soul Stealer really won me over. If you've enjoyed reading about Aru Shah or Paola Santiago, I think you'll find Pahua Moua to be another new friend.
This story educated me and warmed my heart all at the same time. I felt emotional for the things Pahua was going through, and for her love of her brother. The friendship that blossoms as Pahua learns about her own powers was really something I adored. This book is a fantastic addition to Rick Riordan Presents, and I can't wait to read more stories about Pahua.
A more thorough review will be posted on my blog at a later date.

If you had told me this was a debut after I read it, I would not have believed you. The writing is beautiful, the prose engaging. This story was one I was vaguely family with (mostly due to Netflix's Over The Moon) and to see it in this way was fantastic. Reviewing it is difficult, though, because, from about 30%-60%, the pacing slows to full drag. It then picks up, and you want to rate it five stars.
The world-building, while slow, was necessary for connection to the characters. The story had me wrapped up enough to continue to the end, and I'm really glad I did that. Xingyin is a fantastic main character, who is interesting and consistently true to herself. If you enjoyed Six Crimson Cranes, you're likely to enjoy this book as well, with a similar writing style on a brand new story.

With competition akin to All of Us Villains and many other magical tales, Payback's a Witch brings a rom-com style to the concept. Lana Harper's writing is descriptive, sometimes bordering on overly descriptive. Our characters fade in and out, from interesting to prop pieces. However, the main romantic characters were sexy and interesting- and queer, which really holds this book up at times.
This book could have been much more enjoyable had the pacing been more understandable. Unfortunately, the writing lost itself with the overly grandeur and too much filler. The magic was less than charming, and the characters felt disconnected. This easily could have been a fully enjoyable rom-com, or a fully enjoyable fantasy, but oscillating between the two simply did not work for this particular story.
