This book was an exciting thriller. I enjoyed that it was similar to the show and book You, but Delilah was badass. I think this change in the story was really refreshing. Delilah is her own person, and, after a long time of abuse from Brandon- she isn’t going to take it from Logan. She’s determined to get out of both situations and go to college without a mark on her record. There is this underlying plot of a drug ring occurring in the school they go to, but, other than its role in the ending I found this to be a little distracting. I understand the role it played in the overall plot, but I don’t think it was necessary to get this done.

There were just small pieces of information fed to us throughout this story that piqued my interest, but, nothing came of them. This alone is why this book was not a 5-star read. I wanted more information about these tidbits and wasn’t given them. It felt unnecessary in the end.

This book was really interesting in how it gaslights Fern. This was one of the few thrillers that I genuinely did not have figured out until about 75% into the book. I had my guesses, but when everything was revealed I was genuinely shocked. I found Rose to be unlikable from the start, but felt that perhaps this was from years of abuse and lack of therapy. I didn’t care for the way she treated Fern and the relationships that were developing.
As the book progressed, I liked Fern more and more, and her love interest. Often when reading thrillers, love interests feel frustrating and unnecessary. This particular interest was sweet and really enjoyable to read.
Reviewing thrillers is complicated as I never want to spoil the story for my readers, but let me tell you that this fast paced thriller was an amazing read. I enjoyed all the aspect of it and even the representation of someone with sensory issues. If you’re someone who likes to read a quick thriller, this is definitely the one for you.

I liked this book. I loved the magic in it and the way the tattoo magic evolved. I found Griffin much more entertaining in this book than in the last book. I also found Diavala more satisfying to read about than in the first book. However, Celia Sand is still the same impulsive Celia Sand. There only seemed to be a little bit of character growth for our Celia, and it didn't come till around the end. This was a bit frustrating, as you would think that she would have changed more with Anya's death. The relationship between Griffin and Celia was charming to read. I liked the experience in the second half a lot.
However, the ending of this story was not satisfying. When I finished the book, I felt like I needed more. The end of the first book left me feeling that way as well, and I find that frustrating. As the story began to wrap up, it felt like I read 75% of the book to pass the time and only the last bit of the book really concluded things. The only reason this is salvageable is because the characters and world is so fascinating to me. This is why I have given this book 3.5 stars instead of a full star review. I was left wanting more, and knowing I wouldn’t get it.

TW: Assault, drug addiction, villainization of drug addiction and mental illness

The reason this was not an entirely five star read for me was that at the exact moment I would have classed this as genuinely scary- the story took a turn. And this turn made me angrier than anything else. We want to change the "crazy girl" horror trope, and this story attempted to do that. I would not necessarily say that it succeeded, however. (
Spoiler Using drug addiction as a horror trope seems just as short-sighted and mildly problematic as using mentally ill women as a horror trope. They're both mental illnesses.
)

Horror is always a tricky genre to review as it can easily step into the problematic. I did not appreciate the way drug addiction was used in this book. However, the atmosphere was creepy enough to keep me on my toes and make me believe in ghosts. I also really enjoyed most of the characters in this book and how they learned from the things that happened. That's what makes this a 3.5 star read.

I read this book as part of my ClearUrShit readathon. This was specifically for the Scary Book prompt in week two. If you guys followed along any with me, you'd have seen some of my updates about this on both youtube and Twitter!
Sten does a fantastic job of building you up in suspense in this book. It was a slow start, but this was to get all the groundwork going. As we learn about our characters and their histories, you start to question everyone's motives for working on this project.
The ending answered all my questions, which is all I ask for a lot of the time. It was wrapped up without being predictable. That's a challenging task in a book like this, and I think Sten did terrifically. The slow intro is completely worth working through for the rest of the book.
