Thank you to Netgalley and DC Entertainment for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked Alec and the other research “geeks” in the comic. They felt fun and I wanted to experience more from them. Walker was intolerable from the get go, and even his explanation for his actions fell short for me. The cousins felt realistic, like every redneck in the middle of a small town nowhere I’ve ever experienced. Their toxic aggression and violent hobbies all seemed par the course. I know it’s a comic, and I assume it’s a standalone, but the wrap up was pretty quick. It felt like a lot of world building and character creation, only to quickly wrap everything up when one realizes they’re out of time. The ending didn’t surprise me, but that doesn’t mean I loved it either.
For Maggie’s breakout into the comic book realm, I think she did a really good job. I know story telling in the short form that is comics can be tricky, and I would imagine coming from writing novels would be even harder. Maggie did a great job with this, and I would be interested in reading more comics from her- and maybe from Swamp Thing in general!

I found the story and world in this book really compelling. It was incredibly interesting, and I wanted to know more with every page turn. I think, however, in an attempt to both world build and create excitement for a first book in a series- we lost some character development. It was sometimes difficult to tell who was saying what, and Klara’s internal dialogue was often…said aloud. Had this book been either a little longer, or, the sequel well promised already, I think we would have gotten more justice. I really enjoyed the way that Callaghan wrote of these classic characters in such a new way. The ending felt a little tidied up too much for my taste. It was then unraveled for there to make space for a sequel, and I feel a little confused about what the sequel would even be. I would love to see more of Lottie and Klara, and am intrigued if anything to see where this journey will go.

I will admit that I am not the biggest consumer of Sci-fi books, and so I was a little worried picking this one up. However, Paolini writes in such a way that you feel welcomed and encouraged to explore the world he created. His characters all have something you can relate to, even down to the space squids (squidlings? Any splatoon fans?). The end was so magical and interesting to read that I was surprised by it. I had my concerns about how this would end, but Paolini did not disappoint.
The reader for this audiobook does an incredible job. The various voices and simply the way she embodied Kira sucks you in. She did an amazing job, despite the way Netgalley's audiobook player butchers the audio quality.

Judderman is the next in the Holt House series, and as soon as my friend told me about it being available for request, I snatched it up quickly. I think listening to these novellas as audiobooks does the best justice to them. I personally did not enjoy Judderman as much as I did the first book in the Holt House series, however, it was still quite spooky of a read. This book was more atmospheric and dark than the first book, and as a whole, that is not my favorite. I know that these stories are all written by different authors and have different themes, so I cannot wait to see what the next one will be about!
