This book is absolutely fantastic. It's been quite a while since I've read a book where I've got caught up so much in the emotions and the characters. I read the whole last third of the book in one night, not being able to put the book down, and then was incredibly upset when it ended. Everything came together beautifully at the end, and I spent the last probably hundred pages on the verge of tears. I heartily recommend this book.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. A moving collection of short stories. Brilliant, political, makes you feel all the emotions. So many emotions. Only negative is a bizarre characterisation of the Tamil Tigers in one of the stories, but other than that, absolutely perfect.

A truly outstanding and unique work of art, exploring human nature, culture, politics, oppression and much more with great subtlety and poeticism

While reading, I kept finding myself thinking of parallels between this work and the recent film Parasite by Bong Joon-ho, most notably when a bigoted character in each remarks that people of lower classes/castes have a distinctive, unpleasant smell. More generally, both works are very tense and puzzling explorations of class.

I’ll write a longer review later. But this book is absolutely amazing and heart breaking and inspiring and horrifying and fills you with righteous outrage and makes you want to tear down the whole system of borders and torture camps and parliaments and prisons.

It is impossible to comprehend how good this book is until you read it. Every communist and their dog had recommended it to me, yet I was still blown away by both the events related, and the manner in which they were told. Politically incisive, riveting, filling you with both red-hot anger at injustice and unrelenting hope that injustice can be overcome. A must-read.
