It almost like...Carmen Sandiego meets (low-dose) Hallmark movie in Pittsburgh??
4 stars because this was exactly what I asked for - a lighthearted h cozy holiday read without the heavy-handed romance "fluff." While I, too, enjoy a good Hallmark movie this time of year, I was itching for something a little less overwhelmingly "sweet" to read. I originally hoped for more character development, but in end was fine with the more plot-driven approach for a quick evening read amidst a busy holiday season.
We love a local author. Be forgiving with small typos and grammatical missteps. 🤍

I become a bigger Jim Dale fan with each completed book. Stellar narration.

An incredible debut. Easy 5 stars. Will re-read.
While shelved YA, it contains big themes and asks even bigger questions - gender/race and their intersectionality with power dynamics, generational trauma, grief, love, family/community and intergenerational relationships. These topics aren't inappropriate for YA readers, and Boulley's writing introduces them effectively in an accessible way without being overwhelming or solely for shock value like other authors.
Narrated by Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota actor Isabella Star LaBlanc, I cannot recommend the audiobook enough.
Mad at myself for letting this sit on my shelf so long./

My toxic trait is thinking I'd be able to solve this....yeah, no.
While I've technically read this, I feel like I've not read this. At all. The difficulty of read with all the spoonerisms and old text (and song) references is more than you've been warned.
Good luck!

More cozy fantasy - if you enjoyed Legends, I imagine you'll enjoy this. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I preferred this prequel (but it definitely makes me want to re-read Legends). Another tale of business and community building, but with a touch more adventure and even better characters.
Thistleburr sounds like a place I'd gladly spend my Saturdays with Fern and Potroast. Satchel was a quick friend. And Maylee the sweetest.
