Took me a little while to get into this one, but once I did I really enjoyed it. I liked the characters, and there was a nice dichotomy between 1912 Cairo and the steampunk/djinn aspects. This is book 1 in the universe, but there are three short stories that preceded it, and I found myself wishing I had known that and read them first as there were a few references to events in those.

I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as the first book in the Thistle Grove series, but to be fair I am a lesbian, and while the first is sapphic the second focuses on a cishet relationship. I figured out the mystery fairly early on (although not all of the logistics of it), but I really love the world building and the characters in this series, and it was an enjoyable read. I definitely plan to continue.
