This book started out a bit slow, but I can easily attribute that to the fact that it's the first in the series, which required a lot of background and world building. I will definitely read the next book ([b:Web of Lies|6933152|Web of Lies (Elemental Assassin, #2)|Jennifer Estep|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1262902266s/6933152.jpg|7164540]) to find out where the characters go from here, but I probably won't be putting it at the top of my TBR list anytime soon.

Overall, it was a good read and I look forward to continuing the series, but it wasn't one of my recent favorites.

This book has been on my TBR list for about a year, but for one reason or another just never made it to the top. Finally, after [b:Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5)|6587387|Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5) |Patricia Briggs|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1258762890s/6587387.jpg|6527865] kept appearing on my recommended books list on Amazon, I decided to dive in and see what all the fuss was about.

Let me just say - I'm glad I did! Once I started reading, I found it very difficult to put down my Kindle. Briggs did a wonderful job setting up Mercy's world. And I was very intrigued by Mercy, Adam, Samuel, and Stefen (although he was mostly on the fringe yet). Briggs' wolves are familiar, but don't feel overdone, and the tension that the coyote brings to the mix added something unexpected (not just your typical werewolf/vampire disagreements).

I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the series and began reading [b:Blood Bound|285205|Blood Bound (Mercedes Thompson, #2)|Patricia Briggs|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1253769991s/285205.jpg|2577848] as soon as I finished (at least there's one benefit of starting a series after it's well underway).

While I really enjoyed [b:Moon Called|71811|Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1)|Patricia Briggs|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266465626s/71811.jpg|69530], Blood bound was even better. I loved learning more about Mercy while she learned more about herself, and the more detailed introduction to Briggs' vampires was also welcome. While still not a main character, Stefan's role was made much more interesting and I look forward to finding out what will happen with our maybe not so bad vamp.

The continuing tension with the Samuel/Adam/Mercy triangle is something I could live without. I completely believe the interest between Adam and Mercy, but I just don't feel the chemistry anymore with Samuel and it makes it hard to believe that she would choose him. Hopefully this will be resolved in the next book, but I don't mind it enough to deter me from continuing (and loving) the books if it's not.

I hope we learn more about Zee (and since the third book is titled [b:Iron Kissed|1412138|Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3)|Patricia Briggs|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51mCQO8qoSL._SL75_.jpg|1178926], I'm guessing that we will) and would like to learn more of the Walkers' history.
