Loved this a lot more than I thought I would. We don’t talk enough about misogyny/homophobia within the queer community enough! Genuinely fell in love with the characters and very possibly pictured the main love interest as Jungkook. Also appreciated the ace representation even though it was small.

Heartbreaking in a weird way

I wanted to be more thrilled than I was. It didn’t necessarily have me on the edge of my seat, and the resolution was a little anticlimactic. One thing I loved was the diversity of queer experiences in this book.

Devon seems to have known about his queerness for a long time and grappled with it, while Chiamaka has had no inkling of being attracted to women until one day it happens and she has no existential crisis about it, she just accepts it, which is SO REAL!!!

Not to mention the diversity of experience among Black people within this book. I loved that Devon and Chiamaka were genuinely not super compatible as friends. They do learn to appreciate each other and their differences, but they genuinely are super different people and aren’t just gonna click because they’re the only two Black kids at the school. I guess all this to say I was touched by the characters but a little underwhelmed by the plot.
