Sweet little stories. I understand why it was groundbreaking subject matter at the time, but the language used around trans people doesn’t really hold up today.

I originally ordered this book when it was published a few years ago because I went to grade school with Ellie. Finally picked it up, and I am glad I waited until after my white water rafting trip last summer to read it.

The little St. Paul details made me smile amidst a very sad story. The beginning and the end were the best parts for me, I thought it dragged a bit in the middle. If you’re looking for an action packed survivalist novel, this isn’t it. It was more meditative, weaving together timelines as the narrator tries to make sense of her current situation as well as her past. I enjoyed how Lee’s history unraveled before us as she journeyed down the Thelon. Boy, was her story bleak, though. The ending was much more hopeful than I expected which I thought rounded the story out well.

Definitely the most comprehensive work on her life but it sucks how a lot of things just aren’t known for sure and will never be known. It didn’t feel like the author had a bias or angle which I appreciated, she truly attempted to capture the whole picture as much as you can. Unfortunately it does seem to be that you need to be truly unwell to create genius works of art

I don’t really listen to audiobooks in the summer

Do I agree with everything in here 100%? Of course not. But is there a lot in here I can take and utilize in my own life? Absolutely! Like lowkey I’m in my Let Them era!

I’m sick and I wanted something that would pull me in and wouldn’t take long to finish. I had found this in a little free library a while back and I believe I read it as a kid. Knives Out Junior but like 40 years earlier

I think I need to take a break from my internet theory reads

I liked it. I downloaded a digital copy after it was referenced in Jenny Odell’s Saving Time. I thought the simple writing made it easy to read and put the focus on the concepts which really pulled me in. I didn’t love where it went in the end but I guess that’s just life.

I love Jenny Odell. I want to reread How to Do Nothing. I’ve started keeping the Sauces Bald Eagle cam open in a small browser on my laptop at work. She wrote that in the summer of 2020 she was watching the Decorah Eagles live cam. Wild to think she was looking into my town as I sat on the side of the river reading her first book.
