Wow! This story was a truly inspiring story of two women and their struggles living in the 1800s. I have always loved reading about the days of slavery and the different views that people had back then. If you liked the book The Help I think you would really enjoy this book.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Published May 6,2014 by Scribner
All the Light We Cannot See is about our two main characters Marie Laure and Werner and their lives during World War II. Marie becomes blind at a young age and lives with her father in Paris who works at the Museum of Natural History. Marie’s father builds her replicas of Paris and Saint Malo where they live in different parts of the book so that she can learn how to navigate her world while being blind.
Werner is an orphan boy who lives with his sister Jutta until he is called to join a special school to train as a soldier. Werner’s life is not easy by any means with the inner struggles he has to face. Werner is very good with radios and this is not always a good thing for Werner.
This is the second time I have read this book and I have to say that I enjoyed it much more this time around because I feel like I rushed through it the last time I read this book. The writing is beautiful and I think that this is one of those books where you have to be in the right mood because you have to pain attention. It can be a little confusing because of the way the book is laid out. The story changes between time periods and between perspectives which can be confusing at the beginning.
I think that this book did an amazing job showing some of the parts of history that we don’t really like to talk about like the scenes from Werner’s school and how they picked out the weakest cadets. Overall I think this book is one that will stay in my memory for years to come and help me to remember “Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever.”
