Read because I couldn't get a recent performance of Cabaret out of my head and I enjoyed Isherwood's "Kathleen and Frank"
And though both novels were readable, I didn't really like any of it. It all felt familiar but not of a type I enjoy.
And how they got Cabaret out of Goodbye to Berlin, I'll never know.

Love Jane's domestic skills (and the fact that her name is Jane).
Got a little annoyed with all of the . . . and . . . and . . .
In a way, you can tell this is one of Montgomery's last books. The characters just aren't as fresh and sparkly and seem somehow recycled.
But it's Montgomery, so I still like it.

Not bad, but not great enough for me to seek out more Ginne and Geneva books.

The rise of Hitler and the Nazis through the eyes of the US Ambassador to Germany and his daughter. Gripping stuff--and runs counter to the idea that the brutality of the Nazi regime was a big surprise. Dodd warned and warned and was ignored.
Martha, his daughter, is a fascinating character. Fascinated by politics, trying to build some sort of literary salon but also a bit of a player and a tease.
Highly recommended--nice to see Larson not trying to recapture the magic of Devil in the White City but do something else.

I kinda knew I would like this book. And I really, really did. I finished it up today while getting a pedicure, and I totally think everyone in the salon thought I was crazy. Not many books make me giggle and snort like this one.
And yet, she said some very, very profound things about working women and feminism. Loved hearing more about the 2008 election skits especially. My love for Tina Fey just continues to grow.

Huge fan of the Great Brain books, so I was looking forward to the "adult" version of the story. Part of it shone, and part of it was a bit of a struggle. Alas, I kept waiting for him to bring the funny the way he did in the Great Brain books, but that never happened.
But as a piece of memoir about the American West? Pretty amazing.

Not nearly as fun as the first. Mystery felt flat, and the reasons for Nell's involvement were a bit weak. Plus, some very annoying things that should have been caught by an editor.

But it's a mystery set in the museum world. Which does amuse me.

One of those books that grows on you--I liked it and then I suddenly loved it.

Mitchell assumes that her readers are halfway intelligent, so she doesn't explain everything which makes it all that much more powerful. So refreshing!
