This was so good! I was reading this at night along with the audiobook and there was a thunderstorm outside and omg the atmosphere was amazing. There were so many moments where I was genuinely creeped out. I could relate to the MC being the black sheep of the family (although not exactly in the same way) her family was insufferable but unfortunately realistic. The last 100 pages of the book takes on a more satirical vibe and I LOVED IT. The writing was solid. I interpreted the book as a metaphor for how a toxic family/childhood can follow you and take a toll on your life. Definitely recommend!

Genuinely like…..what even was this lol. This book made it glaringly obvious that the author had no idea what they were planning on doing with this series when she wrote the first book. Brand new villain in the last book of the series, new romance for Amari out of nowhere (probably because people said in the past that they wished Zelle and Amari would get together), absolutely no consequences for anyone’s actions. You don’t really care about any of the characters anymore or their relationships. The writing is average. The plot is a MESS. It’s a ya series and it’s very graphic in its description of violence but then in the end everything ends well for everyone. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this series.

Good writing, important message and themes that were handled with so much care, great premise, but overall just an ok read. You really don’t get connected with any of the characters, none of them are likable really except Anna and Shelby but you still don’t necessarily feel a connection with them. The writing was alright, I would definitely read from this author again. The thing that kept me going with this book is just how insanely important it is to shine light on the terrifying mistreatment of indigenous woman, and the author handled the topic with great care. There were definitely some moments where I got teary eyed. I was not impressed with the audiobook narration, and I recommend reading this book with your eyes if you can. One important thing: this book is NOT horror, more like general fiction if anything. I would say the only reason this book could be classified as a horror is because of the real life horrors that are depicted in the book, but even then nothing is really on page (which I respect and like that decision.) I wouldn’t say that it’s a mystery either, as everything that you expect to happen, happens. I didn’t enjoy the dual timeline as it didn’t add anything to the book, and I honestly think this would’ve done better and been more emotional as a linear story. I loved the ending! Overall, give it a try but if you’re reading it and not feeling it, I’d say dnf as I don’t feel like anything later on in the story will change your mind.

Absolutely loved this and devoured it in one sitting. The writing is descriptive and impactful, both the timelines are equally entertaining. This book is heartbreaking, themes of addiction, codependency, abusive relationships. I was rooting for Mia the whole way, and her relationship with her mother was like watching a train wreck and you just can’t look away. My only complaint is that I didn’t enjoy Jade’s character, but I did like what her character brought to Mia’s storyline. I love vampires, and this novel had such a fresh take on it. I can’t wait to read the sequel and see what else the author writes.

This was a solid and compulsively readable horror novel. I absolutely loved the setting and cultural elements. The writing was solid, and you could really envision the descriptions. Once in a while there would be a sentence that felt clunky or misplaced. The pacing could be messy at times. Amara’s journey was very well done, and the ending had great build up and was satisfying to see unfold. I was a bit confused by the last 10 pages though. Overall, id really recommend but please know that one of the main topics being covered in this novel is violence (physical, sexual, emotional and systemic) against women.

Such an interesting book that’s very much vibes before plot. The prose is very over written with descriptive vocabulary, and usually that doesn’t work for me but I really enjoyed it in this one. It’s written in 3rd person POV, and you are not in one singular persons mind. The POV will switch back and forth all in one page, almost like their thoughts are in conversation with each other. The characters and their interactions are so intriguing, and they really felt like real people. I loved how nothing was really explained, and we would get random tidbits of information about things that are going to happen in the future or in separate parts of the world. I definitely feel like this book could be a new favorite upon reread.

This is a solid read if you go into it with the right expectations. This is not a romance or erotica, but a story about an obsessive, lustful and compulsive love between two men across the ages.
I love how the timelines all came together, and it had a satisfying ending. Please know that there are some scenes of SA, and the author uses some…..unusual euphemisms when writing sex scenes (consensual or not) that I personally hated lol (influence, pink plum, and molten lava to name a few.) I personally don’t think that most of the sex scenes were actually supposed to be sexy, but were actual plot moving scenes. I loved how distinct their personalities were in the different timelines, and I loved the references to the sleeve cutting story. I’d really recommend if it seems like something you’d be into!

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke - 3.75⭐️
Really intriguing premise, but I think this would’ve done a lot better with another hundred pages. There’s no build up once the contract is made, things get very graphic very fast and it kind of tampers the tense atmosphere a bit. Loved the mixed media format!

The Enchantment - 2⭐️
Although this one has an interesting premise, the shocking moment at the beginning of the book is very similar to something that happens in the first story. And then, the story just goes on…..and on…..and on……with nothing interesting happening.

You’ll Find It’s Like That All Over - 1⭐️
This was dumb as hell. Nothing intriguing, scary or fun about this story, and the overall “theme” makes no damn sense considering what actually happens in the book. The author says it’s about what we’ll let happen to ourselves in order to remain polite…..to me it seemed like he just needed the money cause he was struggling with bills ???? And then the inner monologue at the end of the story couldn’t have been more in your face. This 20 page story made me want to DNF the whole book at the very end.

My advice: not every idea needs to be written, and not every story needs to be published. This is my second collection by this author, and it’s really just made me realize that he writes short stories cause he’s not a strong enough of a writer to write a full length novel. I’ll try another collection of his, as I do think his premises can be pretty good, but overall this collection was underwhelming.
