This is definitely the best vampire story I've read. It's written in journal and memorandum entries, which creates an even closer first person point of view. The people making the entries repeatedly note that they wish to transcribe everything that has happened. I think that has brought more feeling and suspense to the story. A lot more suspense. I thought it interesting that a lot of characters were Doctors or men of the law. It had me thinking who I'd believe if I was there in that time line. I would no doubt be like Quincy, who would believe something only after seeing it for themselves. I don't think I'd believe Renfield, the insane person in the asylum, who proclaimed that his Master (Count Dracula) has come for him. I may believe Mina, but then, she too needed to study the evidence of who Dracula was in order to believe.
I read this while listening to the audiobook on my iPod (narrated by Christopher Saul). My book was a kindle illustrated version, meaning it had little maps. Christopher did a good job with the accents. I really liked the accent for Van Helsing's. The kindle edition was pretty good.
As for the story. This was pretty good. I am very glad that I read this. When I told my mom I was reading this, she just rolled her eyes. I could understand, as the paranormal isn't my usual choice. But I found this to be good. And even a little more than just about vampires and other paranormal stuff. The Doctors were all scientists of the mind. So their evaluations of the matter was a little interesting. Some a little chauvinist and ego driven. Like Van Helsing's thoughts of Dracula's "child-brain" and their "man-brain" being better to cope with death and violence than a "woman's mind". And then the contrast between Mina and Lucy. Lucy, the not-so-angelic woman and there by more easily persuaded by Dracula. And then Mina, who all the men thought was the most angelic creature.
I think my favorite characters are Mina and Renfield. I don't think I would've been able to endure reading the slow middle portion of this story without them. I knocked the star rating down a bit because of the slow middle. It had a climatic start and finish which I really liked. This is certainly a favorite of mine.

Review 2013 5★
Pooh - now a family tradition.
My parents read this to me when I was younger. I loved hearing about the many short stories or as I knew them to be as 'the many adventures of Winnie-THE-Pooh.' I was disappointed at that young age to not see more illustrations in the book. And as I grew older, I've learned to draw my own illustrations of Pooh Bear and his friends.
I don't have kids of my own. But my two sisters both have a little girl. And they're both being told the story of Winnie-the-Pooh by their Aunt Shell. The eldest niece is 3 y.o. and I've started reading this the short stories to her. I've found the best time to read a complete short story to her is when she's tired. Otherwise she gets bored of a story that doesn't have that many pictures. I purchased Winnie the Pooh: Pooh's Honey Trouble (Disney Winnie the Pooh) for the younger (19 months) niece. And I also had to look up the Winnie-the-Pooh song to sing to them. Although they both enjoy the last portion of the song the most.
This kindle edition has been pretty nice to read. It has helped because I can double tap on the pictures and then enlarge them. That's been helpful when my 3 y.o. niece wants to look at the limited amount of pictures better. The stories are a classic to me and I have a feeling it will be for my nieces too.

Reread (uptenth time) finished March 27, 2014
Reread on kindle book while listening to audiobook. And watched and love the movie. Rereading with the audiobook was even better.

2008 and on
I like Austen, a lot. I've read all her novels (including the non finished ones). I've seen a lot of Austen films, and have read some Austen related books. I mention this because the main character has an obsession of Austen and Mr. Darcy. Shannon Hale is more known for her young adult fiction fantasy, but Austenland is adult fiction.
This book is a modern ADULT British Chick book. This is geared more for adults and for people who are familiar with Colin Firth's portrayal of Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E Miniseries).
It has a typical 32 year old single woman with high expectations of her Mr. Right. Although in Jane's case, it's Mr. Darcy. Her English attitude and accent was off putting at times, as well as Jane's childish inner thoughts. Shannon went too far in making Jane insecure. I did like some of the humor and even laughed a little.
The premise of the retreat and Regency era role playing is both original and comedic. The details of Pembrook Park is delicious to where I imagined myself there. This storyline and romance is why I have and will continue to reread this.
I got this ebook for $2 and I also have the paperback Austenland: A Novel
And I'm very interested in seeing how this will look in the upcoming movie.
