Haller hits the ground running with a full caseload after another lawyer is murdered. He's had a rough road after the ending of [b:The Lincoln Lawyer|79885|The Lincoln Lawyer (Mickey Haller, #1)|Michael Connelly|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1370140049s/79885.jpg|1427801] and thus he's able to retread certain B-plots from a different angle. One of his new clients is a movie mogul loudly declaring that he's innocent of killing his wife and her lover. Haller builds a competent defense, yet there's a game being played he doesn't see.

It's a little frustrating to see Haller continuously be the pawn. He's a smart pawn, but still finds himself far from in control of his own story.

I love characters that surround Haller, and I like that he manages to "do the right thing," even as he's getting not guilty verdicts for bad people. My mother in law foreshadowed/spoiled a few bits of this, but it was still an enjoyable read overall. I have a copy of [b:The Reversal|7936809|The Reversal (Harry Bosch, #16; Mickey Haller, #3)|Michael Connelly|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1344264202s/7936809.jpg|14180015] on the shelf. It was interesting to see Bosch from a different angle in this book and I look forward to seeing how Haller and Bosch interact in The Reversal.
