This actually went better than I thought it would. After the second book, I wasn’t so sure and I have to admit, it really took the wind out of my sails for this series.
And the start wasn’t promising. Everything with Angelica and l’eau melincolique was super random. Like, super random. It’s almost like Shelby wanted to throw everything at this book and tie up every single loose end, when some of them didn’t need to be.
And in the end, they kind of went out with a whimper too.
I also felt like the events of this book almost directly wanted to emulate the first book. I get it, S&D was a massive hit, but the second and third books, not so much.
Still, we got our answers, we got closure and the series has ended well. Am I pleased? Yes. Is it everything I wanted? Yeah, sort of. But was it the book I hoped for? No, it was missing something. The magic of S&D unfortunately hasn’t been replicated.

6 stars.

I LOVED this book! I’m in love with this series too!
I love Evie, even if she is self-centred and selfish.
I love Sam, and Memphis, and Theta, and Henry, and the addition of Ling. I am so excited to have a biracial character!!
I love the feel of old New York, and the creeping influence of New Orleans.
I love how this is a different story from the first book, but still ties in with a sense of bigger things happening.
I’m not sure about Jericho, and the love triangle, and I wish there was more of Arthur in this book, but I hope he’ll be a bigger part (for Mabel) in the third book, which I can’t wait to start!

For the life of me though, I don’t know why more people aren’t mad about this series, it’s terrific!

This is a quick, sweet, easy read.
I like the humour, and the unexpected bits of drama.
I do think the parents history is a little random, and more than a bit mean, especially considering the overall feel of the book, but it adds drama.
I do wish there was more romance and I loved the diversity but did want more.
Overall, an okay read. Not spectacular, but not a waste of time either.

Just not for me. The beginning was boring and nothing hooked me.

This book was quite challenging for me.
I wanted to love it, as a biracial person I was so excited to see a biracial character. But this book is not something I’d usually read if I knew all that entails.
This book is dark. And gruesome. And very spooky.
I liked the twists and turns but there were so many times when I flat out disagreed with what happened. I really don’t like doing that with books I read.
This is a great book for people who like dark, who like horror. There are moments I loved, but the overall feel of the book just wasn’t for me. Sorry!

I really enjoyed this duet! I loved Jase, I loved Kazi, I loved Wren and Synové.
I loved that this book was more romantic than the first, and I loved that I never knew where the twists and turns were going to take me.
The audiobook narrators were great too, and I loved the accents.
A seriously good duet, worth the hype!

OMG! I loved this book! I was a little worried that second book syndrome would hit with this series, but I am so glad and relieved that it didn’t!
I loved Yeena. She is so strong, but broken, and a little unsure. It’s nice to see a character with doubts!
Yijeong is total book boyfriend material. Flirty, but sensitive, and loving.
I also loved Yeena’s coven, and the dragons, oh the dragons!! So cute, so funny!
I was a little bit unhappy that the storyline here was so similar to spark to shadow, but it was a different enough that it didn’t read the same.
The political intrigue added depth to the story, as did Yeena’s trauma.
This book has it all. Magic, dragons, romance, intrigue, humour, and a dash of danger, one of the best books I’ve read this year.

Okay, I had a rough start with this book, like almost DNFed at 3% rough.
But it sounds exactly up my alley so I pushed through.
I’m glad I did.
I love Kazi, and Jase, and Synové. I like the romance and the political intrigue. It’s billed as similar to six of crows, but I have to disagree. It’s not. But it is as enjoyable.
I do think the world could’ve been set up better in the beginning. I wasn’t, and still aren’t really, sure about what’s going on in the kingdoms and things, and that was one of the reasons I was so close to DNFing. But this is a solid book, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the second one!

I absolutely loved this book and don’t know why more people aren’t raving about this book!!
I loved the atmosphere, the setting, the characters, the history, everything!
Evie is fantastic!
Sam is hilarious!
Theta is incredible!
Memphis is fascinating!
I particularly loved Theta and Memphis.
I’m intrigued to see how Sam and Evie develop as with Jericho and Mabel and Arthur.
This is such a great book and I can’t wait to read the others!

So I initially DNFed this book, but wanted to come back and give it another go.
I’m glad I did.
I really liked Zafira. I also really liked Altair, Nasir, the gang and Yasmine.
I loved the journey Zafira went on and her backstory.
I loved Nasir. I also loved Altair and the humour he brought to the story.
This book is a journey, figuratively and metaphorically. I loved reading it, and the twists and turns and an intrigued to see how it ends!
