A very enjoyable read, very well written with great pacing. Yes, it is dated at times but Boulle’s story still holds up very well. This critique of prejudice and racism still rings very true. I found it way more interesting than any of the movies. Highly recommended.

The sci-fi elements are fantastic, and so is the scope of the story. There are enough concepts in this book to make 2-3 novels, easily. It takes some time getting into, there is a lot of world building, but once you are in, the inner logic of the universe takes over and you follow the story quite easily.
That being said, I enjoyed this book but didn’t totally love it. I never truly connected with the characters, maybe because there are so many of them and they have opposite goals. There is character development, twist and turns, but for some reason I feel like there was always something missing between the plot and the characters. I also believe that the book could have been 100 pages shorter, some portion on the Tines world are overdone and get repetitive. The mechanics of the Zones and of space travel and battles are also quite complicated at times. Which is fine in itself but can get a bit tedious at times.

A solid story with a funny main character. It is the first novella in the series and really feels like it’s just trying to establish the universe, but it was entertaining and enjoyable to read. I’m actually looking forward to read the rest of the series.
I actually enjoyed this one more than the first book! I guess learning more about Murderbot’s character is what I want. Now onto the next one!
More action oriented than the previous one, with the nice addition of Miki. Enjoyable, but not exactly as good as Artificial Condition.
A mostly good if not totally satisfying conclusion to this story arc. It is starting to get repetitive, I hope Network Effect has a different way of telling the story. Nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed reading Murderbot so far and will continue.
A good novel that improves upon the formula of the novellas. The second half is particularly good, especially with the return of a character that I really liked from the novellas.
That being said, Murderbot needs to renew itself to stay relevant. I think Wells has done a great job with this character and the novel was actually a bit better than I expected, but now I feel that she’s reached the limits of what can be accomplished with that concept as it is.
Of all the Hugo winners that I’ve read, it’s in the lower tier. It is funny and entertaining, but definitely not very deep (even though it tries at times), and I do expect some depth from a Hugo winning novel.
So 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because for all its faults, I did have a good time reading this book.
