i think this book was trying to do more than it accomplished. i don't say this often, but i feel like it would functioned better as a tv series than as a book because the premise is fascinating but characters are underdeveloped in favor of heavy-handed atmospheric descriptions.

read this book, make your parents and friends read this book, and then talk to them about it. then reread the chapters on police brutality, education, and "but what if I hate Al Sharpton?".
