My Rating : 4.5
First, I was really impressed by the cover art which by the way is absolutely amazing. Second, I kept seeing this book everywhere in Bookstagram. Third, since this book was available in Storytel as audiobook, I decided to pick this book up.
.
The blurb of this story is what makes you pick this book up once you decide to read it. I mean witch and witch hunters? I am sold. But I was really surprised when the starting few chapters of the book took a turn I least expected!.
.
1. I have to say it was quite funny to read the main character introductions. Louise and Reid make the perfect couple suited for readers entertainment even when the stakes are so high around them and people are literally dying.
2. I didn't expect to fall in love with Louise and Reid as a pair. It is interesting because they both have their own distinct persona that you can relate with AND the fact that they are literal opposites. Lou is impulsive, driven by her instincts, outgoing personality, has a weird take of things in life and hates where she lives. And Reid is honourable, thinks before he acts, has a very strong beliefs, and has a really protective side even though he doesn't want to.
.
When you come to the plot line, structure and the story flow, this book has maintained a good balance between them all. There are characters introduced that serves certain purpose, and might be important in the next installment. But the whole crux of he story how our main characters navigate through their difference and try to understand each other with a different perspective. Even when there are lot of secrets involved, lot of plot twists and drama happening, it all comes back to the main characters and how they deal with the situation. It is not entirely character driven, but I would say the characters take the spotlight even though there is a good plot holding them together.
.
Overall, even though the book didn't start the way I expected it to be, and had it's moments of dry patches, it came though by giving all the right feels and emotions, makes you want to sympathize with the characters involved, and keeps you guessing what would happen next even though sometimes it's pretty clear. If you are looking for a fantasy book with all the above mentioned things, I highly recommend picking this book up ! And if you can get hold of the audiobook, that would be even better.
