I think this is a really solid horror novel!
I found it to be incredibly campy, which I love. The humor did miss the mark a ton, but not always. I did find myself laughing at certain things that were said! One of my favorite lines was very early on when Daniel makes a joke about forcing people to spend money at their stand by gunpoint and no one laughed, so he thought "What if I killed myself right now?" Thinking about it now still makes me giggle because it was definitely relatable.
Daniel, though, overall was SUPER unlikeable. He was super immature (all the characters were, but DEFINITELY Daniel) and he could be pretty annoying. Honestly, all of the characters were certain degrees of unlikeable for different reasons. But, I think, in a horror novel, the characters don't NEED to be likeable. I think I prefer if my horror novels are full of deeply flawed characters.
Now for spoilery stuff:
I REALLY loved 2 scenes. The scene where Daniel has the video call out in the grocery store parking lot was so intense! One of the best, scariest horror scenes I've read. It's up there. My heart was literally racing! And then he gets hit by a car JUST then?? Brilliant.
The second one was the summoning of Mister Bones. Coming back in and he pops out of Xio's Abuela?? THEN HE RIPS XIO IN HALF? That was terrifying.
I think it's so funny that Mister Bones was manifested into existence by basically 4chan. That SOUNDS like something they would totally DO. I also very much appreciated the reference to Mister Bones' Wild Ride, because that was the first thing I mentioned too when our book club picked this book.
I found the ending super satisfying! I enjoyed my time reading this, despite some annoying parts!

Pretty weird and gross but the alien spacecraft stuff was interesting. Otherwise I didn't really dig it.
Very intense! I loved it as much as I loved the first. Lots of heart-wrenching moments.

Pretty decent! The end was a cool twist and I liked it a lot. I'm taking a half point away though because Robert Neville sucks and every time he saw a female vampire he had to convince himself not to rape her??? And also the dog died immediately.
Lots of sweet moments, very easy and simplistic but if you're looking for a cozy love story, this is a good option.
This book isn't for me.
I would honestly rate it lower, but i feel like that would be unfair because I don't think I'm the demo for it. It's very young adult.
The format for ao3 is fine. For a novel, it's horrendous. The concept is super unique and intriguing, but honestly the book barely gets into it. It focuses on, for the most part, 2 main characters, Stef and Christine but doesn't stay with either long enough to really build on either. There's also a smattering of a crapload of other characters with similar names (Paige/Pippa, Aaron/Adam) and so much back and forth dialogue when there's several people in the room. It was incredibly difficult for me to get through.
For this to be an actual novel, there would need to be some serious editing needed. So much stuff was rehashed over and over again when it would flip back and forth from Stef to Christine, I about lost my mind.
Great ideas, but not executed well enough for me at all.
