This was the first 'proper' short story anthology that I've read. The main thing I discovered is that I'm not really a short story person. Having said that, some of the stories were extremely good, and I'll be looking up a few of the authors to see what else they've written. A few of the stories were, erm, not so good. But that's the gamble you take with a collection like this!

It took me a while to get into this one, but I'm glad that I kept going. The story doesn't pull any punches. Slavery, fighting and killing aren't glorified in any way. While I was initially annoyed at the endless spiral of things going wrong, I came to appreciate the fact that situations wouldn't always end happily.
Not one to read if you're looking to cheer up. Very much worth it if you're looking for grit.
