This book offers many different takes on feminism and lgbtqia+ topics through various lenses and characters, most of them black, queer or feminists, sometimes everything at once. It’s nothing groundbreaking and the writing style starts to get a bit too much after so many chapters and different views on those topics, but the general theme is quite interesting. Just sad, that the characters don’t get enough time to dig deeper into the topics the author talks about and offer more insight.
Over all, not a disappointing read, but still very easy to grasp and not as revolutionary as it might claim to be.

This one is really hard to review, mostly for the sake of the mood and setting changes throughout the book. There are a lot of fantastical and magical influences and towards the end it gets more complicated to actually understand how all of the characters came to their powers.

Still, I really enjoyed reading it and it is very refreshing to see a middle-aged muslim heroine being a terrifyingly good sailor and swordswoman. The book follows a very diverse group and also touches on topics like sexuality and gender identity as well as slavery and misogyny, but stays in the typical YA world.
