I downloaded this book for free in exchange for a review for NetGalley. I really enjoyed it. I liked the characters but the names (maybe that's a petty thing to point out.) kind of seemed really unique. Too unique. Almost all the characters in the book seemed to have cool names, and in real life, there's a good mix of unique and typical names. It may have just been my own pet peeve but that was something that really bugged me. I like the book to feel as realistic as possible, so the names were definitely a negative for me. I felt the opening was very good. It definitely is an attention grabber and a great way to get people to keep reading. Though the first chapter was a bit confusing and why they were being chased by police was never answered. I am assuming that it is a question that would be answered in book 2, but then I would argue that it should be placed as an opening to book 2. Not book 1 as most people do not read the next book in a series immediately following the first, especially if the rest of the series (or even book 2) hasn't been released yet. I thought the plot was really interesting. It made me want to keep reading. But it also jumped around a lot. Between the adults having secrets and the kids with their shadow boxes and the weird doctors and the pills and blah. I just wanted some sort of resolution by the end of the book for at least one of the issues, or at least a few answers. But I guess I'll have to wait for book 2 to get any. The character development also seemed a little rushed and off at points, especially with Teagan. Brock and Harley had really nice gradual development, but Teagan just switched. And with the switched of perspectives between Teagan and Harley, I really would have liked to learn more about what Teagan was thinking.
Overall a solid 3 1/2 stars. It was definitely a good read and I'd definitely read the rest of the series. It had its flaws but I enjoyed it.
