I like this more sci fi twist from Schwab rather than fantasy, it was a fun change. I love how they write morally gray characters, particularly Victor and Mitch!

Eh?

I felt like some of the characters fundamental changes were just too much? Not Libby, that one made sense, but of the 6 only Nico is how he was in book 1 and it felt very off.

Atlas is weird, I truly don’t get the motivation behind his goals here, there really doesn’t seem to be any reason.

I think I enjoyed book 1 more, despite popular opinion.

However, I did enjoy this sci fi take on the reality of letting capitalism rule us and the consequences that creates. This series feels accessible and like a good starting point for people interested in getting more into sci fi or fantasy, as some more difficult books in these genres deal directly with things like religion and capitalism but in much more difficult to understand ways. For that, I enjoyed this book.

Ultimately though, I just really didn’t like April as a person or a human very much, but did enjoy everyone else.

Robotic aliens that choose a 23 year old for first contact? Super fun and couldn’t stop reading.

4.5/5

This book is just so well written I found myself loving even the moments where nothing was happening.

A fantasy story with a focus on dreams and not on a war or conflict is rare and Laini writes such an amazing story here. I loved the discovery of oneself in the young characters and can’t wait to see what they do in book 2.

Pacing was off a bit but I still really enjoyed this book and am excited to see what direction this series can take now that the vessels have been chosen!

This is a good but a hard read for anyone who struggles with mental health.

There are moments in this book where anyone who struggles will see themselves in Aza and really understand how she’s feeling, and those moments will become frustrating as you read her making decisions that hurt her.

In the end , obviously, things work out for her, but it is a hard and trigger warning filled read for anyone struggling with anxiety, OCD, and depression.
