just oscar wilde being one of the greatest writers to ever live

i went into this book feeling a little apprehensive. i have a VERY rocky relationship with the dark academia genre. i often associate da novels with rich white kids, living rich white people lives, doing rich white people things. and even though the pretentiousness may be the whole point, i could not care less

devastated that this didn't work for me

things that were good:
‣ the world - as always, sanderson has the most unique concepts, his imagination is on another level
‣ very accessible/easy to read - sanderson has such a simple writing style, it make his work so easy to binge
‣ seeing the cosmere slowly expand, AH i’ve been waiting literal years for this

things that didn’t work for me (that’s not to say they won’t work for you)
‣ i was so bored the entire time. not a single part of this book felt engaging. i didn’t care for any of it
‣ the humour - i’ve said this many times before, but sanderson’s humour might just be the least funniest thing on the planet, for me. if you like the shallan / lift / syl type of humour (characters from stormlight), i think you’d love this. it comes across as too childish for my liking. although this novel is quite self-aware and conscious of how silly it is, it still didn't work for me

i also generally dislike nautical stories, and i’m not really a whimsical cozy fantasy reader, so in retrospect, this was doomed from the beginning lmao

Blood Mercy

Vela Roth

DID NOT FINISH

dnf at 14% - just not in the mood for this rn. slow and boring and the writing was so dry??
maybe i'll give it another go at a later date, we'll see

my first becky chambers ☁️ i'm about to read everything she's ever written, wow

this book is a perfect entry point into sci-fi, and it's definitely my new go-to sci-fi recommendation for people!! a quick, heart-warming, impactful novella that really packs a punch <3

THIS BOOK WAS FUCKING FLAWLESS OMG.

One of the reasons I love romance, is that it deals with so many important topics that aren't talked about enough, and it deals with these topics in a way that feels so honest, authentic and genuine. 'All Rhodes Lead Here' dealt with topics like guilt, loss, grief and heartbreak. It's about rebuilding your life, and discovering your self-worth. And it was soo so good

i'm so obsessed with this book, omg

i've been very unlucky with romances this year. so far this series has been medicore (& honestly a little disappointing), and then this stunning book exists which is just perfection in its purest form

stella is the most relatable character ever (to the point where it lowkey felt confrontational reading this lol, anyone who dislikes stella..... i am taking personal offense bc she is me, i am her), and christian is perfect <3 i adore the grumpy male love interest trope so much. this shit had me squealing AND crying lmao

the writing still isn't the best, but i think that because this is the fourth book in the series, i've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me as much anymore. saying that, ana huang's writing has improved astronomically since book 1

can't wait to see what huang does in the future!!
