this book was a bit of a disappointment, i'm so sad about it. i really thought i was gonna love this one because the haites are my favourite characters, but majority of this book consisted of scenes that were literally copied and pasted from book 3. it felt rather boring/pointless, tbh
still love julian and daisy though <3 they better get a happy ending

GORGEOUS writing, love the premise (mc develops relationship with her late husband's best friend) & how emotionally impactful it was. i've definitely been struggling to find romances these days that aren't just a collection of tropes, but instead have actual depth, and this book checked alll of those boxes.
honestly, i wasn't the biggest fan of dominic?? he eventually grew on me, but idk, i was never actively rooting for him? sloane was stunning though, i love the strong but vulnerable type of mc <3
it could've been a little shorter too, i think. but overall, a fun time for sure

the concept of queer nuns in space sounded so good to me, but this left something to be desired in terms of themes or plot — there wasn't anything in here that kept me engaged/pulled me in
some of the characters had major potential for me to fall in love with them, i almost wish it was longer so i could've reached that point. a few concepts in here were fascinating, including the weird slug ships (cool as fuck), but all in all it was just a little boring for me
i'd still suggest giving it a go if you want something short, chill & female-oriented <3

In this sequel, we finally see all the events that were alluded to in book 1. It was intense and action-packed, lots of political maneuvering (which I LOVE in books).
I enjoyed this one much more than the first. My main issue with the first book, was that I didn't really care for any of the characters. That completely changed in this one. I ADORE these characters now, I'm so sad that I'm not gonna be able to see more of them

"Even in our self-deception, we become gods."
ahh okay, where to start with this book
classic sci-fi doesn't usually work for me, i definitely prefer modern sci-fi. saying that, i reallly enjoyed this one
Dan Simmons has an incredible way with words. his descriptions of settings, the way he builds tension....IMMACULATE. there were so many stunning quotes that t underlined. however, there were a few stylistic choices that i wasn't fond of. the fractured structure definitely hindered me from growing to love the characters, which leads me to my main issue. i didn't care for a single character. there were one or two character's whose backstory was intriguing to me, but i didn't care for them enough to the point where i was actively rooting for them?? idk man. this could also be down to the fact that the story is unfinished. hyperion ends on a cliffhanger, meaning that you really do need to read the second book to get the complete story. the character's individual arcs are unfinished, and maybe when i read the second book, and finish this story, i'll care for the characters a little more?? (but then again, i shouldn't have to read a whole other novel just to begin to care for the characters??)
i did love how this story was written as an ode to Simmons' idols (Keats being a big one). a lot of this novel was Simmons flexing his literary ability, and expressing his appreciation for poetry, and certain poets. i thought it was quite sweet (lmaoo) in that respect
i didn't expect this book to be as dark as it is. it's definitely a sci-horror. Simmons does not hold back with the gory details, but i kinda liked that
definitely unique, i can see why this is such an influential novel for the genre. SO excited to read book 2!!

this might just be my favourite book in the series?
deviating from the sci-fi / horror genre fusion of the first two instalments in the hyperion cantos, ‘endymion’ is a fun adventure story that is primarily an exploration of this universe. our new hero, raul endymion, is tasked with an almost impossible quest of finding and protecting aenea, the future messiah. it involves toppling corrupt religious empires, time-bending aliens, and a tonne of other fun sci-fi things
the general consensus on goodreads is that ‘endymion’ doesn’t live up to the first two books within this series - i both agree and disagree. i don’t think that ‘endymion’ is as well-written as the first two books, but it is certainly the most enjoyable book in this series. where ‘hyperion’ is arguably simmons’ magnum opus, a complex piece that explores a range of artistic, theological, philosophical topics, ‘endymion’ is just a tonne of fun. it’s meta, it’s funny, it’s almost a love story?? it’s just a good time. that’s not to say it’s lacking in discussions - this instalment expands on the themes introduced at the start of this series - from religious fanaticism, to critiques on empire and colonisation, as well as an emphasis on the importance and value of art and culture within society
furthermore, i loved how diverse this book is. as endymion and aenea traverse the universe, we meet a range of peoples from indigenous to muslim planets. i love that this book actually represents humanity, and not just the western portion of the world
i do think the first half was better than the second (pace could’ve been better, there were a lot of moments that dragged for me), and i feel very uncomfortable about the romance introduced in here. it’s questionable, to say the least. but i’m still excited to see how everything unravels in the final book!!
overall, yes the first two books have more to offer, but this one was much more enjoyable to read, in my opinion
