sammie really sat there like “is it me am i the drama”
this was the slowest burn of a read and honestly I hated how slow of a burn it was considering how short it was. yes the writing is beautiful and the characters are interesting, but it just took too long to pick up for me.
i knew nothing about alyssa before discovering this book at my local library while looking for a short palate cleanser of a read. in discovering this book and being introduced to alyssa warm little bubble of a world i found vulnerability. i found love in all shapes in forms. i found independence and agency. i found pain and trauma. i love a good personal essay that takes readers on emotional journeys that you know took a lot of space and autonomy for the writer to sit down and admit to an audience. this book is full of journeys like that. is it a groundbreaking book? no not really, yes it covers a lot of feminist issues, but it’s comforting! it feels like being wrapped in a really fuzzy blanket while having a glass of prosecco with a best friend. it left me not wanting to leave her bubble and that’s what good writing should do! it made me so soft and i loved every minute of it!
I just told my husband the plot of this book and his response was “you love the fucking crazy ones”
And I do, I do love the fucking crazy ones.
And I do, I do love the fucking crazy ones.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book just wasn’t for me which is a letdown because I was so ready to love it. I am all for a story with minimal plot lines which this heavily has, but for some reason the way it’s executed here fell flat for me. I do enjoy the character studies offered and the different types of queer characters that are showcased. I enjoyed the generational divide that always amuses me greatly. I enjoyed the ways in which different kinks are shown and talked about, I think that’s healthy and important.
But I just didn’t care enough about anyone in this story to CARE until around the 70% marker…it shouldn’t take that long for me to be engaged in the story.
