I really enjoyed this book. This was an overview of how the life of women was impacted by the American Revolutionary War. It's divided thematically and provides an overview of the plight of the rich, the poor, loyalists, Native Americans, slaves, as well as the Hessians who fought for the British Army. I found that chapter absolutely fascinating.
I think so much of what we read (and I am obviously speaking to my own experience here) about the Revolutionary War is a rehash of Adams, Franklin, and Washington over and over. So it was incredible to see these first hand accounts that I'd honestly not known existed. I do wish she presented more material directly from them instead of paraphrasing, but I understand why that was done for the flow of the book.
Recommended if you're interested in early American feminism or Revolutionary history.

Older Newbery winner about bullfighting in rural Spain. This is very well written but bullfighting is so out of fashion I do not think it would garner much interest nowadays. Very well written internal conflict.
Pretty darn good, but sadly my kids have lost interest!
This certainly is timely.
Wanted to love this, just didn't. The writing is very, very loose. Characters are introduced and never revisited. This a very quick read and does introduce a young reader to some valuable concepts like pre-Columbian America and Indian Schools.

What a treat it is when we have a new Klassen book to read the kids have never read. TJ immediately asked to read this again the moment it was done. From I Want My Hat Back to now, he is far and away their favorite author.
Excellent middle grades read. Engaging from the get go with a well rounded cast of characters that develop fairly well. The plot moves briskly and there were twists I didn’t expect. First book I’ve read by Jennifer Holm but I’ll definitely be reading more.
Also, there’s a cat!

A lot to like in this 2nd to 3rd grade book. Felt a bit long for the grade level. Nice to see a book with Filipino representation. Very positive examples of friendship and dealing with anxiety.
Fascinating collection of case studies. Couldn’t put this down.
This is so raw and upsetting and real. I didn’t realize when I started this book that it was written in verse. It moves very fast and I read it in one setting. One of the best youth novels I’ve read this year.
This book is just *chef's kiss* for me.
Plot driven historical fiction with well imagined characters, descriptive (but not drawlingly so) place settings, and an overall cozy vibe that just warms you up. I have read dozens of YA books about WW2 from the holocaust piece and they're important and gut wrenching. All the same, it's nice to see the Blitz imagined so well here.
Definitely shed a few tears toward the end of this one. Would be *great* optioned to film.
