This was an interesting, challenging read. Not as much world building as I might have benefitted from but I enjoyed reading it nonetheless!
This was a quick read. The first third was gripping and then the plot fell apart a bit. The voice of the narrator, Eli, was terrific.
The voice for the protagonist in this novel is terrible. I hate phonetic dialect so much and this is rife with it, yeesh, moving on.
The art was a complete miss for me but I found the content poignant. I think my favorite chapters were the ones about Mira's childhood.
This is b l e a k. I followed up a stretch of 10 middle grades fiction books with an absolutely upsetting novel about a man marooned for his entire life at a fort of no importance. This is beautifully written though. I’d recommend it if you liked Calvino or maybe Borges.
This was infuriating. I loved it.
I really enjoyed this look at an expedition I knew nothing about: the by sea and overland endeavor to establish a fur colony at the end of the Columbia River.
I lived in Astoria, OR for several years so it was a neat trip down memory lane to read all those place names and see just how they came to be.
This was a well contextualized book. The author deftly compares the fate of expedition between the Jefferson and Madison presidencies and gives special note to just how impactful the War of 1812 was to the fledgling colony.
It was also honest and respectful to the Native American peoples who were such a large part of those early colonists lives.
I’d recommend this if you’re interested in the history of the Pacific Northwest or Manifest Destiny.

Hard to write a review of a book like this. The author in the preparation of and before this book was at the receiving end of hideous abuse from white supremacists.
I found the anecdotes where she went “undercover” to be the most interesting sections of the book.
The essay portions were a bit repetitive for me.

I've never seen the movie, which I understand to be significantly different from the book.
The characterization in this book is simply phenomenal. Holly Golightly is such a complete, flawed character. The side characters too, from the barkeep Mr. Bell to the agent OJ, they all feel real, despite their limited "page" time.
I knew that the movie had some jarring racist moments that would shock the unaware, and some of the language in the book does too. Not sure how to sit with it because it's just there, it's not trying to influence the reader of anything, and it's specific to a character's speech patterns. I digress.
I listened to the audio of this, narrated by Michael C. Hall, and it's top notch. He did a great job.
