I actually shed a tear. For real. "Buried Beneath The Baobab Tree" is a very important book, so captivating. I feel like sending Nwaubani some flowers to thank her for writing it.

The narrative style was interesting. Based on the true stories of girls abducted by boko haram, Nwaubani writes a fictional story from the point of view of one girl. The chapters are really short, almost like journal entries. I just finished "Girl In Translation" which used the same style so I got into this vibe almost immediately. Captured by boko haram terrorists in the middle of the night, the protagonist starts out as a very bright lamp, and we follow her journey as that light get dulled by the happenings around and to her. What hurts the most is, I know that as I was reading the book, a girl somewhere is experiencing the same thing and I felt helpless.

Many people have heard about boko haram and the women and girls that were (are) abducted, we still don't see them as people who had hopes, dreams, and ambitions. We're not aware that when some girls are rescued, they still have nightmares about their friends who were killed, are plagued with guilt for abandoning others. We're so far removed from it, they are just headlines, numbers. This book does a good job of reminding us to feel. Yeah, that's what it does. The book is very predictable no doubt, I knew how it would end, I knew what she was going to go through at different stages but I was still moved. Nwaubani is a really good storyteller.

I love Simon but this book is not worth the hype. It's good but not great or mindblowing. Too many repetitions.

This is a must read!
