Hi, Mx. Deaver? Thank you and screw you for writing this. It was perfect & I couldn’t put it down so I read this instead of doing my homework, and now I’m behind & it’s all your fault.

Ok but actually though, this book was just so so lovely to read. Emotionally distressing at times? Absolutely. But it did get me emotional at times and that doesn’t always happen to me with books.

If you’re thinking of picking this up, and you’re not sure if you’ll like it... you will, so do it!

I wanna say this is more like a 3.25 lol. I’m kinda conflicted on this!! Some parts were great - Juliette is such an amazing character, the side characters are delightful, and the themes literally take what was already there and make it so much better!

But!

Other parts of this were iffier for me. I thought this would be a more straightforward retelling - Romeo and Juliet but set in 1920s Shanghai with crime families - but like, there was a whole other plot? And like sure it was cool but i came her for the angst and yearning? Which only showed up in the last 25% but didn’t really do it for me, because:
1. It wasn’t even on the forefront. How are you gonna make the romance in ROMEO AND JULIET a subplot
2. Roma is so bland. Juliette is so cool and like what does Roma bring to the table? He’s “secretly soft”? No he’s not lol he just has no personality. He’s hot and that’s it

Also please let dead characters stay dead. I know I said I liked the side characters but like again this is Romeo and Juliet. If there aren’t death WITH ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES in the sequel I’m gonna riot.

But anyway I’m still excited for the sequel

I really liked this! But I do have a few criticisms:

1. I think the romance part of this book is was a bit too quick - both in terms of pacing and how quick Millie was to use the L word

2. I feel like there should have been more drama about a gay royal - like, if 10-15 years from now, William or Harry’s kids come out, it’ll be a big hubbub, no matter how open-minded society becomes. There were elements of this with Queen Clara thinking Flora’s being gay is a phase, but like, what about the public? I feel like that would have also brought more tension to the book, as I feel like that was sort of lacking

But overall, a really great fluffy little book! I’ll definitely read the original (who knew this was a sequel?)

i'm sorry but the worst thing your satire can be is boring
