West African tale about why mosquitos buzz. Pretty good!

Beautiful illustrations, and one of the best stories out of any Caldecott I've read so far.

This is a circular story, which begins and ends with a hermit pondering big and little. The hermit sees a mouse getting chased by a crow, and changes it into a cat to protect it. Things sort of escalate from there. The illustrations are wood-carvings, and kind of pretty, although not my favorite style.

Now here is a book with gorgeous illustrations. I guess that's one of the things I like: collage-type illustration. This is the story of the LA Riots through the eyes of a young boy who has a cat, Jasmine. When his apartment building starts burning, Jasmine goes missing, along with neighbor Mrs. Kim's cat. Will they be found?

I really like the wood-cut illustrations in this one too. The story of how we got stories, and also a story about Ananse.

I actually quite liked this book. Hildy Biddle wants to be a star reporter, just like her dad, who died not that long ago. The old Ludlow House in her town seems to be haunted, and indeed has a sad past. Hildy doesn't believe the hype and goes to investigate. But someone doesn't want Hildy to find out the truth...
I will agree with some other reviews of friends that it wraps up a bit too quickly for me, and is a bit too long in the set-up at the beginning.

This, thus far, is the only Caldecott book that I use for story time. It is a wonderful, quiet story, beautifully illustrated (a book in black and white that I love? What?) and children love to hear it read aloud. One of my favorites.
