This debut book really deserves all the praise it's been getting. I love the protagonist.
I requested this book after reading positive reviews on YALSA's listserv. It disappoints. There are attempts to sound hip by throwing in pop culture references, but they just seem to stand out strongly. I kept rolling my eyes a lot and thought the characters' actions were really unbelievable (and yes, I know this was a ghost story.) Scarlett in particular was difficult to understand.
I am definitely going to read the next one, but I have to say, this book is pretty fluffy! It also has one of those Mary Sue-ish protagonists who doesn't know what she is doing at first but suddenly she is perfect and the best at it! Yay! It managed to keep me reading until 12:30 last night though, so I will give book 2 a try.
Like Meg Cabot? Wish she wrote a book your 8 year old could read? Here you go!
I listened to this on audio, and I was crying as I was driving. It's really good. I gave it to Andy to read after. Tt's nominated for a Maine Student Book award, and while I wish it would win, I think that Diary of a Wimpy Kid is going to end up the champion. I'm not sure I will ever look at cows the same way again.
