It started off so good, so funny, and then she goes and talks about fat being a bad thing again. If it happened just once, I could probably blip by, but the second and third time just threw me off. I don't think I'm extra sensitive about it, but I'm really just not in the mood to deal with it at all.

Honestly, I thought it was really weird to have women in this book who owned slaves, or were friendly with Nazis (Coco Chanel). I'm sure I've missed a few other weird ones. The slave owning women felt especially egregious because her chapter was followed by Phyllis Wheatley. I also found it a little weird that all the women were drawn the same way on the chapter headings with no skin tone difference. In a book for children, I found this potentially harmful, as it makes it harder for children to differentiate if race would have been a factor. Sexuality is also not discussed in the book at all (that I recall).

I read this memoir because it's being challenged in so many places. I don't quite see what all the fuss is about, but I'll admit I'm fairly liberal with what I am willing to let people read. I think Johnson's memoir has an important story for teens to hear, and I'm glad he shared it.

I haven't read a lot of takes on motherhood. I'm not a mother yet myself, so maybe that's why. Anyway, I thought this book was interesting and I liked the way it examined how we treat mothers. I don't think I love it, but I enjoyed the experience of listening to it.
