A look at a family divided by the Berlin Wall and their attempt to get back to each other.
Looking at what it is like to have a parent in jail. I found parts of it to be a bit contrived, but overall it was an excellent story.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would, based on the cover. Leander and Polly are both enjoyable characters. I did have one moment that sort of threw me off, but I enjoyed the story more with that plot beat thrown in, so although I don't like how it came about, I've made my peace with it. If you enjoy stories about the American Civil War, or cross-dressing female soldiers, you'll like this one.
Oooh will you feel Arthur Owens' pain! Such a good story about the power of redemption.
Eh. It was an enjoyable enough read, but I wasn't 100% convinced that Eliza acted like a 12 year old, and also, like a 12 year old in the mid 1800s.
I now know for sure that Cross's story is my favorite. The Chase twist did throw me. It was a good ending to the series but not the best book in it.
I got an ARC of this from NetGalley, and I am wondering if some of my confusion is due to the formatting. Though each character's point of view is labeled, I still had a hard time being plunged into the world. Maybe if I had looked at a map first to orient myself that would help. I am always astonished by the atrocities men will do. I also wonder why this, the worst maritime loss, is not as well known as the Titanic or the Luisitana. Is it due to being German? Anyway, Septys has crafted another excellent story that will show you the atrocities of war that happen on both sides and make you want to learn more about this particular part of WW2 history.
