I like the overview of various kinds of music included here. I dislike the way it is organized. It doesn't make much sense to me at all.
Really enjoyed this one. Steampunk, fantasy, strong female characters...what's not to like?
Now I finally have read a work by Dickens. Also, I now know who Miss Haversham is. Yay, cultural knowledge!
A glimpse into the childhood of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. I think this is a great gateway into the life of an important figure. I also love that it shows that Barton struggled too. She has a lisp and is made fun of for it. It doesn't stop her though!
Dare the Wind: The Record-breaking Voyage of Eleanor Prentiss and the Flying Cloud
Emily Arnold McCully, Tracey E. Fern
I can still follow a map somewhat, but I must admit I am very reliant on GPS. I cannot imagine being Eleanor Prentiss, brave enough to navigate New York to San Francisco around Cape Horn using a sextant. A brave soul. It also continues my assertion that Eleanor is a powerful name.
Eh. I was disappointed. "Princesses Are Not Quitters" was better. This one seemed to be weird catty infighting followed by inexplicable sudden lack of caring for appearance. I'm sure it will find its place, as all princess books do. I wouldn't consider it a must-have purchase.
For an 800 page book, it kept me reading! I enjoyed this story, watching Wataru come of age and learn about how he wants his destiny to be. I do wish, however, I had more background on Japanese myths and themes, because I think that would have enriched my understanding. To research!
I loved this book. Fighting for your rights using the justice system and winning? It's a great story with beautiful illustrations.
