Have you been waiting for a new book that adheres more closely to standard science fiction? Perhaps you should give this one a try. At least, that was my thinking when I started reading it.

Life on Mars is hard for Durango. He ekes out a living as best he can, even though he is dalit. He has a mysterious past and a mysterious mission.

I do have a few complaints about the book. I thought the beginning was well done but it tapered off toward the end. There were a couple of things that just randomly seemed to happen (if I explain further it would be a spoiler) and I just was not impressed with it. Lastly, if you have seen Firefly, the random Chinese swearing and a few other aspects will be off-putting.

Overall, I liked the book. The beginning was very good and I had a hard-time putting it down. The ending, however, left a lot to be desired, and I think it was attempting to set up for a sequel. I would read the sequel if there was one, to see if some of the issues I had with this book were cleaned up.

Eh. Slightly better than the last one, but still growing stale. And then I read the back of one of her newer books, and I wasn't all that impressed. I think it's time for me to give up on Janet Evanovich.

So, I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I was not in love with this book. I listened to it on audio, and I didn't find myself enjoying it until disc 4...of 4. I found the narrator to be annoying and have too high an opinion of herself, although I enjoyed watching her realize that some of the other children her age would be okay. I also thought that she was overreacting and just having stress from moving, and when that ended up not being the case, I was disappointed. I'm sure this book will be popular with kids (it's already gone missing from our library once) but it was not my type of book.

Beautiful illustrations and I learned some fun facts about nighttime creatures. Sometimes I wonder who the audience of the book is, with the beautiful illustrations, poetry and facts, some of which are a tad complex. I'm sure it will find that audience though.

It was very good. I was a little afraid it was going to be another "sad dog book" but it was not. I suppose that is a spoiler. I still think [b:The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane|37186|The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane|Kate DiCamillo|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1168855192s/37186.jpg|822151] is my favorite out of her books.
