This book was recommended to me by the president of my library school. I wonder, if I lived in the South, if I would have appreciated it more. It took a while for me to get used to the fact that almost every chapter is told from a different person's perspective. It allows to see all sides of a story, but was confusing at first. I would not classify it as a romance novel, which I thought was the impression the blurb gave. In fact, I was a little doubtful of the romance subplot as a whole. I did enjoy reading about the Franklin battle and its aftermath, as I don't read a lot of Civil War fiction.

This is my least favorite of the war offerings on this year's MSBA list. Petros is a boy in WWII Greece who is picked on by his older brother Zola. The Italians are already hanging about, and there are rumors that the Germans will move in at any time. Petros and his brother get involved in some dangerous games in an attempt to help the war effort. Based on Akila Coloumbis' life.

I love Van Allsburg's illustrations.
I love Van Allsburg's illustrations.
I enjoyed it, although I feel like this series is starting to be drawn out a bit too much. Something needs to change. As much as I enjoy reading about Grandma Mazur, I think it's getting stale. Something's gotta change.
A cute book. Not the winner of the Geisel Award but still a very good early chapter book.
