I liked this book so much...until the end. This is the story of two sisters, their father (a widower) and their dead mother's sister who move to an insane asylum in New York. It's the story of dealing with a parent's death, and people trying to slowly reform asylums. However, the ending seemed like such a let down. I don't know if Whelan was hoping to write a sequel, or whether it was supposed to be so open-ended. I didn't enjoy it.

Caldecott Medal, 1971

I really like the wood-cut illustrations in this one too. The story of how we got stories, and also a story about Ananse.

Caldecott Medal, 1980

Barbara Cooney illustrations + historical story=happy Sam!

I actually quite liked this book. Hildy Biddle wants to be a star reporter, just like her dad, who died not that long ago. The old Ludlow House in her town seems to be haunted, and indeed has a sad past. Hildy doesn't believe the hype and goes to investigate. But someone doesn't want Hildy to find out the truth...

I will agree with some other reviews of friends that it wraps up a bit too quickly for me, and is a bit too long in the set-up at the beginning.

Caldecott Medal, 2005

This, thus far, is the only Caldecott book that I use for story time. It is a wonderful, quiet story, beautifully illustrated (a book in black and white that I love? What?) and children love to hear it read aloud. One of my favorites.

I agree with Deanna's review that it was a bit of an X-Men ripoff. I thought it was good, but I'm not sure I would have picked it for a Newbery honor book.

Mibs wants nothing more than to turn 13 and get her very own savvy. However, a few days before her birthday, her father gets into a horrible accident. Mibs becomes convinced that she is the only thing that can wake her papa up, and she goes off on an adventure to do so. Some subtle romance and growing up occur during the trip.

This was good right up until the end. I just didn't like the ending. Otherwise, if you enjoyed The Neddiad you're going to enjoy this book.

Eh. I didn't find any of the characters to be sympathetic, I didn't really like any of them, and I'm actually not quite sure why I finished the book.
